Update for the 2019 Tax Filing Season:
We hope everyone is doing well and are taking the appropriate steps to keep yourselves safe and healthy in light of the ongoing pandemic. We wanted to provide you with updated information on the status of the 2019 tax season.
As you may or may not know, the IRS has officially extended the Federal tax filing deadline as well as the tax payment deadline to July 15, 2020. This means that if you have a balance due with your 2019 Federal income tax return, you have until July 15, 2020 to pay said balance due without incurring any interest or penalties.
Furthermore, with regards to Federal quarterly 2020 estimated tax payments, the first quarter payment, previously due April 15, 2020, is now due July 15, 2020. With regards to the second and third quarter payments, there is nothing definitive yet, but congress is contemplating adding a provision to the bill currently being discussed to move the due date of the first, second and third quarterly estimated tax payments back to October. We will keep you apprised on this matter.
The Illinois tax filing deadline has also been delayed until July 15, 2020. However, as of now, the deadline to pay any Illinois balance due is still April 15, 2020 and the due date for any 2020 quarterly estimated tax payment has not yet been changed. We are unsure on whether Illinois will eventually follow what the IRS did and delay the tax payment deadline.
As you are aware, Illinois is currently under a “shelter at home” order. However, in accordance with the executive order, legal and accounting services have been deemed essential. As such, we fully intend to stay open and to continue providing our tax preparation services. We are, however, trying to minimize foot traffic in our office, so even though we are here, we encourage people to not come to our office. If it is necessary for you to come to our office to drop off paperwork, we ask that you either drop it off on the front desk or leave it at the door and ring the doorbell. Also, we will most likely be sending completed tax returns via Federal Express to minimize exposure from people outside our office.
Since this is an ever evolving situation, the information presented in this page may be subject to change. We will do our best to keep this page updated with the most recent information to keep you informed of the status of the 2019 tax filing season.
We ask for patience during this time. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask a member of our tax team via email or telephone. Please note that email is likely the best way to get in contact with our tax team and we encourage you to contact us via email if you have any questions.
